The Hell’s Detective Mysteries
by Patrick Thomas
Was surprised that I liked this so much. It is pretty graphic but all done with a sense of humor. The detective in question is displaced god just trying to stay alive and still maintain a moral compass. Well done.

Never Never by James Patterson and Candice Fox. Harriet Jupiter Blue is a police detective who doesn’t give up. When her brother is charged with murder, her world starts to fall apart. She is sent to the outback to find out about mysterious disappearances. She finds murdered bodies and falls in love…and finds the killer. The last chapter, she’s at her brothers court appearance. He tells her, “I’m innocent.” I hope there is a sequal to this book, I want to find out what happens to her brother.

the Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen 831/4 This book is both funny and sad written in a daily diary he is living in an assisted living facility.
makes many friends and many comments. Originally written in Dutch takes place in Amsterdam I enjoyed laughing at some of his escapades and outings.

Another mystery that involves murders and disappearances. The talk of underground cities in the old chalk mines keeps the reader guessing. Very good ending. enjoyed very much

Takes place in the Shetland Islands. A landslide at a burial gives up a body that was originally thought to have been a natural death, but was found to be murder.

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan Mcguire
This story takes place at a school for children who have found doors to other worlds and are having difficulty adjusting to returning to their former lives. Their parents feel they will get the help they need to acclimate back to their old selves, meanwhile these children are desperate to return to the worlds they discovered. Nancy has returned from the Underworld and has just arrived at Miss Eleanor’s school. Disoriented by her experience and by the school, she is trying to adjust, when horrible things begin to happen at the school. Now all of the students are trying to find out who is the cause while keeping an eye out for their doors “home” to reappear.
This book was out of my normal comfort zone genre, but it was an engaging, quick read. It was a bit strange at times, but I am glad I went with something outside of my normal choices (it was recommended by a friend).

The Wonder by Emma Donoghue
An English nurse is brought to a poor Irish village to keep constant watch over a young girl who is said to have eaten nothing for four months. Is she a fraud or a “living wonder”? Although determined to expose this apparent hoax in a short time, the nurse begins to question her suspicions and learn some new things about herself and the people she is dealing with. This was a great read. I was kept guessing and wondering how it all would end!

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
I enjoyed the suspense and twists and turns of this novel. There are many secrets and things that are not as they seem, which cause you to keep reading and cause the action to move quickly along. This is an unsettling thriller that will keep you guessing!

The Lives of the Muses
by Francine Prose
This book was about nine very different women who, in some way, inspired the men in their lives to create lasting works of art, which included literature, music, painting and photography. Each chapter is about a different artist and his muse. Some are more interesting and appealing than others. The artists generally reveal themselves to be egotistical and totally self-absorbed, which was not surprising! i enjoyed this book, it’s a little slow at times, but very well-written and ultimately satisfying.

Stars over clear lake by Loretta Ellsworth This book is a love story about German prisoners of war that are sent to camps in the USA and are sent out to work on farms Very interesting. The farmers daughter falls inlove with a German prisoner and the story goes back and forth between then and now

English Boys by Julian Thomas. This book is about an English actor who is Bestman at his friend’s wedding. He is in love with the bride & is distraught when she is found murdered just before the vows. He teams up with the murdered woman’s sister to uncover the perpetrator. The book starts off slow. I initially found the characters pretentious. I’m glad I stayed with the book. The story went from tedious to exciting as the characters were further developed. If you have the patience, you will be rewarded with an interesting read.

Any Day Now – A Novel by Robyn Carr, sequel to What we find, is a typical Robyn Carr novel filled with supportive characters who care and have one another’s backs. Characters who bring out the best in each other. Sullivan’s Crossing is a campground where good people face their challenges and heal.

Come Sundown by Nora Roberts kept me on edge with characters who either disappear or are found dead. Typical Nora Roberts with strong focused female characters who know what they want and reach for it.

Goodbye, Vitamin by Rachel Khong
Ruth, a young woman who has just split from her fiance, is asked to return home for a year by her mother to help with her father’s care. Her father, a former college professor, has Alzheimer’s. The book is written in journal-form, dating each entry, which mimics a similar notebook Ruth’s father kept, chronicling every question she asked when she was a precocious child. The book writing is simplistic while still being deep and poignant. Ruth was an easy character to connect with, even if I could not relate from the caregiver perspective. I enjoyed the novel.

The story alternates between the present and the time of the murders – which makes for a thrilling read as new information is chillingly revealed. It keeps you breathlessly engaged and guessing!

The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod: Twelfth Grade Kills

The book I read is the final book of a great series about a half-human, half-vamire who faces many conflicts throughout the book. Vlad, short for Vladimir, is always being hunted down by vampiric relatives and Slayers. Slayers are a group of people who kill vampires for the safety of humanity. They are all blinded from reality, trained to be bloodthirsty hunters. Vlad had been staked through the heart. The reason he had survived was because he is the Pravus, an immortal half-human, half-vampire being. He learned from his friend Joss, who was formally a slayer, that the Slayer Society was going to exterminate Bathory, Vlad’s hometown, just to kill Vlad. This book was so fascinating to read. The book series has many characters that will make you love the book and want to read the whole series.

This is the fourth book in the Sweet Magnolias series. Jeanette moved to Serenity to help the Sweet Magnolias launch their spa. She thinks there is no way she can do this: Christmas is her least favorite holiday (all because of a childhood tragedy). Also serving on the committee is the new town manager, Tom, who has the same attitude. He was raised in a wealthy home where Christmas was always about show and not about the kids. This book is about how the magic of Christmas can change even the most cynical of people.

The fifth book in the Sweet magnolias series. Annie and Ty were a big part of the second book in this series, but now they have grown. Having been close friends whose relationship turned serious, Annie always thought that she and Ty would get married. That all changed when he was unfaithful while on the road playing baseball. Now, Ty has returned home because of an injury and he has brought his three year old son with him. He wants to be home to do his therapy for the simple reason that Annie will be his therapist since she is the only sports therapist in Serenity. Annie flat out refuses for the simple fact that Ty broke her heart and being around him will only stir up memories. That, and the fact that having a child with someone else is a constant reminder of what he did to her.

At the Water’s Edge
by Sara Gruen
In 1945, towards the end of WWII, Maddie Hyde, her husband, Ellis, and their friend Hank travel to a remote village in the Scottish Highlands, hoping to capture the mythical Loch Ness Monster on film. Ellis has been recently disowned by his wealthy father for his excessive drinking and general bad behavior; he hopes filming the monster will restore him to his father’s good graces. While there, Maddie discovers the true character of her husband and learns some truths about herself. This book started well, was a quick read but ultimately I was disappointed in it. It became just a typical romance novel, with an evil husband, brave hero and a heroine who is always either fainting or bursting into tears. I expected more from the author of Like Water for Elephants.

The Horse Dancer

I originally chose this book because the author wrote one of my favorite books. I was not disappointed. The main focus of the book is a young girl who is being raised by her grandfather. He is very strict, but he has given her a horse. He becomes ill and she ends up living with a couple who are in the process of divorce. She tries to keep the horse a secret and ends up in trouble. Parts of the book are predictable but that doesn’t take away from the story. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

This book is about the only man born in a North Korean Labor Camp to have ever escaped. It is well written. The subject matter is very disturbing. I would recommend it to anyone.

Alex and Eliza is a book about how one of our nations founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton, fell in love with the prestigious and rich Elizabeth Schuyler. Alexander was born on the island of St. Croix and was very poor. He soon was sent to America because of his amazing writing skills. He was sent to fight for the young country for the peoples freedom. He did not succeed in becoming a soldier, but instead became George Washington’s assistant. Alexander was sent to the Schuler’s mansion during an annual party to tell General Schuyler that he was no longer fighting in the war. Instead of just leaving the ball, he met one of the generals many beautiful daughters, Elizabeth Schuyler. He was infatuated with her. Elizabeth wanted nothing to do with Alex. Alex wanted to be with Eliza but she is not a woman to surrender to a handsome man looking to be wed. This book has an amazing plot and a really obsessive love story. The way the author writes their encounters with each other and their thoughts in general makes it that much better. I would suggest this to anybody who loves the musical, “Hamilton: An American Musical”, or just loves a good story with some funny quips.

Twists and turns to find out who is behind the conspiracy to cover up murders, lies and extortion. A very good read.

This is a great summer read. Very typical book by the author. It ‘s about a single mom raising her daughter and working to build/get a home through Habitat for Humanity. She is also reconnecting with her sisters. Who she hasn’t really had contact with since she was a teenager.

Raylene feels that until her ex-husband leaves her alone for good and Carrie overcomes her eating disorder, a relationship between her and Carter is out of the question.

A series of unfortunate events: the Austere Academy by Lemony snicket
Klaus, Violet, and Sunny have been taken from the lucky smells lumber mills, and are now being taken to the prufrock prepatory school. the Baudelaire’s are told by Mr. Poe that they must go to the vice principals office, and when they arrive, they hear terrible noises coming from the other side. this is vice principal Nero playing the violin, where he insists he is one of the best musicians. the children learn that they are not allowed in the administrative building ( where the office is), and they get terrible punishments for being late to class, lunch, or do not attend one of vice principal Nero’s six hour violin concerts. the children even learn that they don’t live in the dormitories, but that they live in a shack, infested with crabs, and fungi. and even worse, the school has no day care, so sunny is forced to be the vice principals secretary. but, the children find friends when they go to lunch, the Quagmire triplets, although there are only two surviving children out of the trio. and when the Baudelaire orphans thought that they were safe in the school, count olaf finds them disguised as a gym teacher. the children are then asked by the gym teacher to run laps outside on the front lawn after dinner, but he does so until dawn, so the children are sore and cannot do well at their school work or secretarial work. so vice principal Nero says that due to their failing, they must take mass tests and pass, or they will be expelled, and put into the care of count olaf (who he thinks is his new gym teacher). and so, the Quagmire triplets decide to help the Baudelaire’s by dressing up as them to run laps, while the Baudelaire’s study. and the following day, the Quagmires don’t arrive, but the Baudelaire’s must take the test, and to vice principal Nero’s dismay, the children pass. but to the orphans dismay, count olaf arrives, and hey realize he did something to the Quagmires. they see the Quagmires being forced into a car, and while the Baudelaire’s run to save their friends, count olaf drives away with the Quagmire triplets.

A series of unfortunate events: The Esratz Elevator
Mr. Poe has taken the Baudelaire’s to their new home on 667 dark avenue. there are huge trees covering the sun, so the whole place is dark. and when they enter the building, the elevators aren’t working either, so they have to walk up around sixty flights of stairs. when they meet their new guardians, they love Jerome, who is sweet and understanding, but are quite indifferent towards Esme, who only cares about what is in or out. then, te children meet an auctioneer named Gunther who is clearly count olaf. the children are desperate to find out what his plan is. they went out to dinner with Jerome, but were worried the whole time. when they got back to their apartment building, they discovered Gunther had not left, but when they got up to the penthouse, Esme said he left. and so, the children worried and worried that Gunther was hiding in the penthouse, but he was nowhere to be found. but Klaus discovered that the elevator on the penthouse floor was fake. when they go in, they find the Quagmire triplets. the triplets tell them Gunther plans on selling them at the upcoming auction. the children tell Esme, but she reveals she was in on it the whole time. and when the auction arrives, the children try to buy a crate that they think has the Quagmires in it. it is revealed to have dolls in it, but Gunther slips on some of the dolls, and is revealed as count olaf. he and Esme flee the scene, taking the Quagmire triplets, who were hidden in a statue of a red herring. and although Jerome wants to keep the Baudelaire’s, they deny it, saying they simply want to save the Quagmires.

Nice quick summer read about townspeople who are trying to overcome tragedy and finding out they are still living in the nightmare. Nora Roberts comes through again with showing how people need to be supported by loved ones and lean on each other to persevere. Great details about the Maine coast and small town coastal living.

Lethal Deception by Lynette Eason is a suspense novel about a woman going into South America to retrieve her deceased best friends daughter. She ends up needing help that she didn’t ask for and is running from someone who wants to kill her. This Christian novel is a quick summer read that was a pleasant read.

Nowhere to Run is a suspenseful novel about a girl and her brother who witness a crime when they were young children. Fast forward to adulthood to find the past catching up with them when a mysterious envelope is delivered to Liv. While she is on the run, she meets up with a stranger that decides to help her.

The President is Missing by Bill Clinton It was an aokay novel It was draggy and not very interesting I could tell you the outcome before they got to it. the whole story is about podus who is trying to stop a internet virus before it takes away everything that is on file.I would give it 2 stars.

The Woman In The Window by A.J. Finn
Anna Fox is a child psychologist/agoraphobic living in New York City. She is separated from her husband, and her daughter is with him. She has not left her house in months, so she spends her days helping others with the same condition through online chat rooms and spies on her neighbors. A new family, The Russells, moves in across the street and Anna is intrigued, especially when both son Ethan and wife Jane come to introduce themselves. They seem like a wonderful, loving family, until Anna witnesses a horrific act inside through their window.
This book was solidly okay. It was slow in parts, the ending was shocking but not incredibly so. The biggest twist had to do with how Anna became agoraphobic.

All We Ever Wanted by Emily Giffin
Nina Browning has been thrust into the wealthy elite of Nashville, thanks to her husband selling his company. Tom Volpe is raising his teenage daughter, Lyla, on his own. Lyla attends the elite Windsor Academy on scholarship, where Nina’s son, Finch, also attends. One scandal drives both families together, and the question of innocence is played out throughout the entire novel.
I am a fan of Emily Giffin’s novels and this was an excellent, quick read. I would compare it to Jodi Picoult’s work where a moral question is raised. I would highly recommend this book!
